PROJECTORS + EFFECTS

Best FX

I’ve always experienced a huge buzz on discovering Special Effect Projection Techniques.

I’d usually think of an effect I’d like to have in my arsenal, then try to create it.

Chances are I’d discover something else, equally wonderful in the process.

Since I started in ’68 I had 30+ years of Analogue Effects, then, just after 2000 I went Digital

meaning that instead of only putting materials and mechanisms INTO Slide Projectors, I was making Macro (sic) Video Clips to blend with my Analogue devices and effects, often combining the two.

My most enjoyed Analogue discoveries were:

  1. the Kinetoscope (after Edison) which was 4 Kodak Carousels behind a huge cut-out wheel, which, when wound to a musical beat, would produce 4 sequential flashes on every beat! This allowed crude Animation by capturing movie-like images in 4 steps, or by simply finding sets of similar images to use together.  A stunning ultimate effect for Rock Anthems.
  2. Variations on my REVOLVERS (Slide Rotators) which involved Kaleidoscopics, Symmetrical Optics, Anamorphics, Fluids, and Dreamscope, a Kaleidoscope w/ 80 reflections instead of 6!
  3. My “Sandwich” or “mini OHP” style Fluids which boiled on the heat generated by the Projector, and literally exploded from time to time. Ditto with Symmetry, Revolves or Anamorphics, and Diffraction Gratings.
  4. Digital Fluids ~ “Spectroluminescence” Macro Bubble shots in natural Rainbow colours!
  5. Flyers. Characters in various Flying Machines, flying round Auditorium walls or down street facades, including LIVE People Video versions to boot! Fancy versions with dancing Laser UFO’s buzzing around object of desire as it flies.
  6. Flocka Dots ~ Dots that Fly like flocks of birds, suddenly changing direction! One of my faves.
  7. Cloud Wheel ~ Clouds in a blue sky which change endlessly, never repeating, just like real clouds.
  8. High Speed Strobe. An effect I’ve become allergic to (Ocular Epileptic) thru too many experiments. Involves masses of paper taped to a Bench Grinder, flying apart, illuminated by a Strobe flashing at 300 flashes per second! (Most Strobes can only do 30 fps!)  Makes running water appear to go backwards.
  9. Atomascope. ~ A high speed Lissajous type effect that one can make a Slide for, by scratching any old squiggle onto film! When in action this device turns UGLY into a wondrous kinetic Arabesquimo!
  10. Hi Power streaming Polka Dots, coloured and distorted by Prisms on turntables, enhancing the curvature of Landscapes, or the building blocks of Architecture!
